Temperature and pressure control is critical. Lace made from natural fibers (e.g., cotton) typically requires lower temperatures (60°C–90°C) and lighter pressure (1–2 bar) to prevent scorching or shrinkage. Synthetic lace (polyester or nylon) can tolerate higher temperatures (90°C–130°C) and slightly more pressure (2–3 bar), as these materials are more heat-resistant and less prone to fraying. For example, embossing nylon lace trim with a temperature of 110°C, pressure of 2.5 bar, and a 3-second contact time often yields crisp results without distorting the openwork.
Supporting the lace during embossing prevents stretching or tearing. Using a silicone or rubber backing pad that mirrors the lace’s texture provides even support, ensuring the die contacts only the intended areas. For very delicate lace, pre-stabilizing with a water-soluble stabilizer (applied before embossing and washed away afterward) adds temporary strength, allowing for more precise pattern transfer.
Timing adjustments based on lace thickness are also essential. Thin, lightweight lace (e.g., eyelash lace) needs 2–3 seconds of contact time, while thicker, denser lace (e.g., cluny lace) may require 4–5 seconds to ensure the pattern adheres. Automated embossing machines with programmable timers are ideal for maintaining consistency, especially when processing large batches of trim.
Post-embossing, allowing the lace to cool flat on a rigid surface prevents warping. For lace intended for garments, testing embossed samples for durability—such as washing or stretching—ensures the pattern remains intact through wear and care.
In essence, successful lace trim embossing combines careful die selection, precise temperature and pressure settings, proper support, and controlled timing to enhance the lace’s beauty while preserving its delicate structure.
