Softness Treatment of Embossed Sheepskin with Leather Embossing Machines

Sheepskin is renowned for its softness and flexibility, and when using leather embossing machines to create patterns on sheepskin, maintaining and enhancing its softness becomes a key consideration. The embossing process, if not properly managed, can potentially make the sheepskin stiffer or less supple. Therefore, specific softness treatment techniques are employed throughout the process.

Before embossing, sheepskin undergoes a gentle pre - treatment to prepare it for the process while preserving its soft texture. Cleaning sheepskin requires using mild detergents and soft brushes to avoid damaging the delicate fibers. After cleaning, a softening agent is applied. These agents can be natural substances like lanolin, which is derived from sheep's wool and is excellent at moisturizing and softening the leather. Synthetic softeners with similar properties can also be used. The softening agent is worked into the sheepskin, ensuring that it penetrates deeply into the fibers to enhance their flexibility.

When selecting an embossing plate for sheepskin, designs that do not require excessive pressure or heat are preferred. Delicate and intricate patterns are often chosen, as they can be embossed with relatively lower force, reducing the impact on the softness of the sheepskin. The embossing plate materials should also be smooth and have a low friction coefficient to prevent any unnecessary abrasion on the leather surface during the embossing process.

During embossing, the temperature and pressure settings of the leather embossing machine are carefully optimized for sheepskin. A lower temperature range, typically between 60°C and 90°C, is used to avoid over - hardening the sheepskin. The pressure is kept to a minimum level that is sufficient to transfer the embossing pattern clearly. Specialized techniques such as using a padded counter - plate or a soft backing material can be employed to provide additional cushioning during embossing, further protecting the softness of the sheepskin.

After embossing, a post - embossing softness treatment is essential. This can involve re - applying a softening agent to replenish any moisture or flexibility that may have been lost during the embossing process. Additionally, gentle stretching or massaging techniques can be used to restore the sheepskin's natural softness and suppleness. In some cases, a protective layer with a soft texture, such as a thin layer of natural wax or a soft polymer coating, can be applied to the embossed sheepskin. This not only protects the embossed pattern but also contributes to maintaining the overall soft feel of the leather.
